Special Review - Leather Journal Covers From Pegai, KMM, and Shinola

I've been journaling for most of my life, except back then it was called writing in a diary. I go through about two journals per year and I still have maybe a handful that are waiting to be used. Recently I wanted to explore leather journal covers with the idea that I should buy refillable notebooks instead of buying new journals to be more eco-friendly.

I picked out three brands to try out. Leather Tannerstein's Pegai, Shinola, and KMM are put to the test. Which one has the best leather and design for the price?

I picked the Dymnos Brown because of the leather description "top-grain calfskin with a nubuck finish that invites touch before anything else". I love nubuck and am obsessed with adding a nubuck bag to my collection. Until I find one I figured maybe a nubuck leather journal would scratch the itch for now. After taking it out of the plastic packaging, I was so disappointed with the leather. It does not feel like nubuck at all. I also wasn't impressed with the design and the thickness of the leather. In my video I show the design flaw. I could not send this one back fast enough. Price is $50 and it is not worth it at all.

Next we have Shinola's Medium Snap Leather Journal in Rust. The color Rust is gorgeous. Made of vegetable tanned Italian leather, I had high hopes for this one. This cover had the best stitching, very nice edge paint, and fantastic finishing details, but for the price, I was disappointed with the snap closure. I go into more detail in my video. The leather felt dry, but as it is vegetable tanned leather this is the type of leather that will patina over time. It will absorb the oils on your hands and I'm sure it will soften up. It just wasn't what I was looking for. For the high price tag of $175, I was disappointed. Shinola has another version without the snap closure in pebbled leather that I would like to try in Merlot. It's also $50 less than the snap version.

Last, we have KMM's Luxe Pocket Travel Journal in Seidel British Tan Double Shot. I was very impressed with the leather choice. The leather is very smooth and soft. I love the rich chocolate brown. The elastic closure has the perfect amount of tension. It has very nice stitching, and I also love the design.

This journal comes with three refillable notebooks. The inside has a front pocket and another back pocket as well. This one is my favorite of the three journals I bought. My only small complaint is the finishing of the edges could have been cleaned up a bit more.

I'm so impressed with the KMM journal cover that I would like to get a second one in the A5 size in Horween English Tan Dublin. I'm going to wait for a sale though.

Do you have a favorite journal cover? Let me know which one it is! That's it for me, I hope you all have a marvelous Monday! 😀

  1. Yasss!!! Love all things stationary. I did go through a travellers notebook phase a while back, and got a lot of accessories to go with it like a brass ruler/bookmark, places to put cards etc. those things can get hefty if you allow it to. Do you have any pen preferences to go along with your journaling? The fountain pen was always the perfect pairing for this leather bound set up, but those are hard to keep up with too.

    1. Hi AC! I haven't gotten too deep into pens, but I might. I picked up a glass pen with some bottles of ink but I haven't yet tried it. I'm worried about the clean up part. So for now I just use a Pilot pen. I can get the exact model for you when I get home!

    2. My favorite pen is Pilot V Razor Point Extra Fine in blue or purple. Purple is getting hard to find I think. I haven't seen it in a long time.

    3. This is the purple but it's out of stock.

  2. AC asked my question before I could: what are your favorite pens?

    1. See above! I'll add that I would love to get a serious fountain pen one day. But I need to practice with my glass pen first.

First Impressions! On Cloudmonster Void

Happy Friday! I've been branching out into other brands for footwear. I mentioned in a previous post I just don't think my Allbirds are cutting it anymore. Allbirds are more of a casual walking shoe. Anything over 10K, my feet start to hurt. I have tried Hokas, and they seem to be decent so far, I can walk 12K steps a day and haven't had issues. However, I am loving the On Cloudmoster Void even more! For reference I typically wear size 5.5 in Allbirds which is my normal street size for sneakers and I am also wearing size 5.5 in On Cloudmonster Void. On CloudMonster Void Ivory | Wolf Size 5.5 (Currently on sale for 20% off -  $135) I'm not a huge fan of logos on my shoes. I decided on this colorway because I love the light gray and lilac combo and it does have a big On logo, but it blends in nicely with the colors. It still has a minimalistic vibe.  This shoe has a 6mm heel to toe shoe drop. This is a good height if you're a heel to toe striker which I am. This is...

Did You Know There Are Two Different Ugg Companies? Review - UGG Lowmel

So I was shocked when I learned a couple of months ago that there are actually two UGG brands. The original UGG since 1974 is the original Australian brand that are made from sheepskin. The other is an American company with the big G uses synthetic fabric and are made in China/Vietnam. Here are the two different logos.  The one the left with the big G in the middle is the company that's made in China/Vietnam. The one on the right is the original UGG since 1974. Each pair is made in Australia! I had no idea and feel so duped. I didn't learn this until after I bought the Lowmel's which are very popular at the moment. But I will order a pair from UGG since 1974 so I can support the original brand. Plus I really want to experience the real thing and I will report back my findings. 😅 That said, I still actually really like the Lowmels. UGG Lowmel Sand   Size Kids 4 I typically wear size 5.5 and I decided to try the kids size 4 which actually fit well, if just a smidge large...

Review! Coach Soft Empire Carryall 40 Merlot

I am super excited about this review! This has been the most anticipated Coach bag since The Rogue came out. At least for me. When I first saw this bag on the purseblog , my eyes widened and I was immediately obsessed. The Soft Empire Carryall comes in four sizes. Size 48 is ridiculously big, I cannot pull it off, but the 40? Perfect. Size 35 and 26 just doesn't give off the same wow factor. This bag is meant to be a statement piece and head turner. Kudos to Stewart Vevers for creating another hit that everyone will be obsessing over for a long time. I hear that more colors will be released soon, and I am hoping the distressed lived-in version will not be exclusive to size 48. In case it doesn't happen, I'll be using my Empire 40 as much as I can to give it a distressed look myself.  For reference I'm 4 feet 11 inches tall and please check out my video to see what fits! Coach Empire 40 Merlot This bag is huge, it's definitely the biggest bag in my collection. ...
