Review- HiBAR Shampoo and Conditioner & Drunk Elephant Pekee Cleansing Bar

I hope everyone had a great weekend. My grandma turned 99 years old! At 99 years old she has some physical limitations but mentally she is all there. I wasn't able to visit but my family sent me a ton of photos and I got to FaceTime her to wish her a happy birthday. How good does that cake look? 😍 I miss my grandma so much and wish I could have been there. I hope to visit her in a couple of months.

Today I have a different kind of review. I've been on a mission to avoid plastics as much as possible and after searching for face cleansers that did not come in a plastic container, I finally settled on Drunk Elephant's Pekee Cleansing Bar. It comes in a cute little cardboard box. The cleansing bar itself is wrapped in shrink wrap, but otherwise it's plastic free. I originally purchased the sampler that comes with the Juju bar which exfoliates the skin. It was good to try but the Juju bar wasn't my favorite. I definitely prefer using Lancer Polish, which unfortunately comes in a plastic container. 😕

After I ran out of the sample size bar, I purchased the full size Pekee Cleansing Bar. The full size is 4 oz and it lasts a long time. The bar lathers up quickly and feels creamy. It does not dry out my skin at all. It's also fragrance free. I like to use my Clarisonic face brush a couple of times a week and it only takes a few extra seconds to lather up the bar in my hands and then massage it onto my face. Then I'll use my Clarisonic as usual. Off topic, does anyone have a good Clarisonic replacement? Mine is 6 years old and I fear that it may be on its last legs. Since Clarisonic was discontinued in 2020, has anyone found a good alternative?

I can't tell you how many plastic bottles of shampoo and conditioner I've gone through in my life, but after 40 years of it, I was tired of having to deal with an empty plastic bottle every few months. I can't recall exactly how I stumbled on HiBAR. I think I might have seen it at Whole Foods and I remember thinking it was something I should look into. Well, it was months before I actually did though. Similar to Drunken Elephant, I tried their variety pack before I committed to a full sized bar.

The samplers have three different varieties depending on your hair type. I ended up settling on Soothe shampoo - which is for itchy, flaky scalps which I can get from time to time. For the conditioner I went with Maintain- for normal everyday use. I've been using both for 6 months now and I really have no complaints!

Let's discuss the packaging. It comes in a thin cardboard container and each bar comes wrapped in wax paper. There's zero plastic involved which is amazing. Now the shape of the bar is a little awkward at first, but after a few times I got used to holding it in my hand. As for how to use it, make sure your hair is completely wet, then you rub the bar over your hair and lather it up. By the way, the ones I use smell amazing. HiBAR does offer a fragrance free version but I personally love a good smelling shampoo. After rinsing, my hair feels soft and there's no residue.

To show size. It's not a big bar at all, my hands are small.

If you do try HiBAR, I would highly recommend a soap holder/rack because you do not want the bar to sit in a puddle of water. It will last much longer if the water can drain off.

We use a shower caddy rack where I place all of my soaps/bars on. Let me know if you have tried any other plastic free shampoo/conditioner/cleansing bars. Would love to know your recommendations! That's it for me! Hope you all have a fantastic Monday!

  1. hi Leslie, Happy birthday to your grandma! She must've been happy to see you on Face time! I wish her good health and happiness!

Thanks for the review on Drunk Elephant and HiBAR! I agree that we need to reduce plastic waste. For hand soap and dish wash, I typically buy refills that come in a big bag. I wish we could also buy refills for shampoo, conditioner and body wash. HiBAR is expensive compared to the typical drugstore products, but perhaps the price is justified if one bar lasts a long time!

    1. Hi Karen! Yep, we also buy the refills that come in a big bag when possible. I also wish we could find refills for other items like lotion. So far I am not able to find anything on that. I did find a really good alternative for detergent and fabric softener. These alternatives are definitely more pricey, but hopefully better for the environment!

  2. Happy birthday to your grandma! Thank goodness we have FaceTime! Great review. I want to mention that I have been using the lululemon exfoliating bar soap. Lathers up easily, mild smell and is not drying and lasts a long time. I heard that they were discontinuing the personal health line, so I bought more (at full price)and now it’s on wmtm.

Review! Coach Soft Empire Carryall 40 Merlot

I am super excited about this review! This has been the most anticipated Coach bag since The Rogue came out. At least for me. When I first saw this bag on the purseblog , my eyes widened and I was immediately obsessed. The Soft Empire Carryall comes in four sizes. Size 48 is ridiculously big, I cannot pull it off, but the 40? Perfect. Size 35 and 26 just doesn't give off the same wow factor. This bag is meant to be a statement piece and head turner. Kudos to Stewart Vevers for creating another hit that everyone will be obsessing over for a long time. I hear that more colors will be released soon, and I am hoping the distressed lived-in version will not be exclusive to size 48. In case it doesn't happen, I'll be using my Empire 40 as much as I can to give it a distressed look myself.  For reference I'm 4 feet 11 inches tall and please check out my video to see what fits! Coach Empire 40 Merlot This bag is huge, it's definitely the biggest bag in my collection. ...

First Impressions! On Cloudmonster Void

Happy Friday! I've been branching out into other brands for footwear. I mentioned in a previous post I just don't think my Allbirds are cutting it anymore. Allbirds are more of a casual walking shoe. Anything over 10K, my feet start to hurt. I have tried Hokas, and they seem to be decent so far, I can walk 12K steps a day and haven't had issues. However, I am loving the On Cloudmoster Void even more! For reference I typically wear size 5.5 in Allbirds which is my normal street size for sneakers and I am also wearing size 5.5 in On Cloudmonster Void. On CloudMonster Void Ivory | Wolf Size 5.5 (Currently on sale for 20% off -  $135) I'm not a huge fan of logos on my shoes. I decided on this colorway because I love the light gray and lilac combo and it does have a big On logo, but it blends in nicely with the colors. It still has a minimalistic vibe.  This shoe has a 6mm heel to toe shoe drop. This is a good height if you're a heel to toe striker which I am. This is...

Did You Know There Are Two Different Ugg Companies? Review - UGG Lowmel

So I was shocked when I learned a couple of months ago that there are actually two UGG brands. The original UGG since 1974 is the original Australian brand that are made from sheepskin. The other is an American company with the big G uses synthetic fabric and are made in China/Vietnam. Here are the two different logos.  The one the left with the big G in the middle is the company that's made in China/Vietnam. The one on the right is the original UGG since 1974. Each pair is made in Australia! I had no idea and feel so duped. I didn't learn this until after I bought the Lowmel's which are very popular at the moment. But I will order a pair from UGG since 1974 so I can support the original brand. Plus I really want to experience the real thing and I will report back my findings. 😅 That said, I still actually really like the Lowmels. UGG Lowmel Sand   Size Kids 4 I typically wear size 5.5 and I decided to try the kids size 4 which actually fit well, if just a smidge large...
