2020 New Year's Resolutions

Tofu Teriyaki Bowl

It's finally 2020 and I've been thinking about my New Year's resolutions. It's especially exciting because it is also a brand new decade. On the top of my list is reducing the amount of meat I eat.

Diet

I'm not going to completely wipe out meat from my diet because it will be unrealistic for me. I will be more conscious about what meat I decide to eat. So far I've been trying out a lot of new vegetarian and vegan options just to see what I like and don't like.

I tried a vegetable pho for the first time. I usually get tripe and brisket. The tofu was very good and I found myself not missing the meat. My husband and I also tried a new restaurant called True Food Kitchen. They have a lot of vegetarian and vegan options. I opted for another tofu teriyaki bowl. Quite delicious.

Vegetable Pho

Over Christmas break I watched a movie called The Game Changers on Netflix that showed the benefits of eating a plant based diet. Not only is it better for your body, but it also benefits the planet. I'm really worried about all the animals that are going extinct from poaching, fires, and in general I'm an animal lover. I realize that if I really cared about all animals, I shouldn't be eating them. That said I don't think I can ever give up sushi. That's probably my biggest weakness. Sushi and seafood. So I do think I will still incorporate some meat every now and then.

Reading

My next resolution will be reading more. I used to read voraciously when I was a kid. Even a few years ago I used to read at least a couple of books a month. Lately I have been slacking off and noticed that social media has really sucked up a lot of my free time. I'm currently reading Olive Kitteridge. It won a Pulitzer Prize so I'm curious to see if it's that good. If it is, I'll read the sequel next.  I would love to hear some book recommendations from you all!

Strength

Fitness is something I'm already very disciplined with. I workout five times a week and consider myself to be relatively fit. I do realize I'm getting older and I'm worried about losing muscle tone and bone density. With that in mind I want to focus on building strength. Back in 2015 I was at my peak fitness. Very lean and had some pretty impressive arms from following Zuzka Light's workouts. I had to stop because her workouts were very hard on the knees and overall very intense. I had to step it down a little bit. I am currently finishing up my second year with Alexia Clark. I'm not as lean as I used to be, but I'm definitely seeing more upper body results. My arms aren't as big but my back and shoulders have really changed which is something that I never used to have. Shoulder strength and back strength have always been my weaknesses. For 2020 I'm looking to increase my weights. I'm very excited!

Me throwback to 2015!

Shopping My Closet

This is my last resolution of the year. I looked back at all of my purchases and found that I still spent the same amount of money on Lululemon in 2019 as I did in 2018.

I added 62 items to my closet. Broken down it looks like this-

Lululemon - 30 items
Athleta - 11 items
Werkshop- 2 items
Shoes- 9 pairs (Allbirds and Rothy's really did me in.)
Work clothing- 10 items

Some of you may remember I KonMaried my closet on my 38th birthday. I'm very tempted to do that again this year. So what does this mean? I am looking to only adding to my closet if it's something that needs to be replaced. In other words one in, one out rule. I hope to add less and enjoy what I already have more. I don't know about you all, but I definitely have a full closet.

What does this mean for my blog? I'll still review items so that won't change. You may see more fitting room reviews. I may incorporate updates on how eating less meat impacts my fitness journey. We shall see what 2020 will bring!

Do you have any New Year's resolutions you would like to share?

  1. Wow! Look at those arm muscles, girl! :)

I’ve found as I have gotten older that I have to ease it up on the HIIT workouts I used to love as my knees often take a toll from the impact. I currently have a subscription to Les Mills and really like their BodyCombat and BodyPump. The past couple of months I have eased up on my dairy intake (I’m also slightly sensitive to it) and have lost 20 pounds from that and my daily workouts. My metabolism has really slowed down and it’s harder to lose weight but I’m doing what I can! Being fit and healthy is important to me.

Reading used to be my go-to hobby when I was younger and I’ve also taken it up again recently! It’s a great way to escape to another world. I read mostly non fiction these days, but I’ve branched out a bit and read some of the classics too.

As far as any New Year’s resolutions, my only one is continuing to watch what I eat and keeping up with my exercising. I try to workout 5-6 days per week. It’s such a great stress reliever too.

I enjoy your reviews and your posts! Hope you have a wonderful, healthy and fit 2020!

    1. Yes, same here. I have a bad left knee so all the jumping was too much. I even tried BBG for about a year and a half and it was still too much on my knees. Alexia Clarke has been fine, it's not as intense or it's as intense as you want it to be, but it's definitely a lot less jumping around.

I'm definitely interested to see if cutting out meat and eating less dairy will impact my fitness. Will keep you posted! That is amazing on your weight loss. The big 4-oh is right around the corner for me and I'm sure my metabolism will slow down even more. I definitely want to head into that decade feeling my best.

Thank you so much for reading my blog! Cheers to a great year and decade.

We tried HelloFresh for the past two months - Here's our review

Hi everyone! This post is written by my husband. Some of you may know he does all the cooking around here. 😅 We noticed we were spending a lot of money on food and eating out every month and wanted to see if a meal kit service would save us money and time. After looking at a few meal kit services we settled on HelloFresh. Without further ado, here's Jared's review. (Original post date Aug 2022). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ As you may have seen from Leslie's Instagram stories for the past 2 months, we've been using HelloFresh for most of our meals. The main drivers for this were to better track what we eat and because on the advice of my doctor, I should be eating more home cooked meals. Before I go any further, it should be noted that my original career path was in culinary arts, but twists and turns in life changed that. So I do have formal cooking experience. A little background story. Over the years, I've developed
