Review! J.Crew Berkeley Bucket Bag

I can't believe this week is Thanksgiving! November is flying! I know this time of the year is just a blur with one holiday after another until New Years. Everyone is busy with the holidays and I'm not going to travel at all this year. It'll be me and my cats. 🐈

Today's review is a comparison between J.Crew's Berkeley Bucket Bag vs. The Row Medium Park Tote. They really look quite similar. Let's take a look at some photos.

For reference I'm 4 feet 11 inches tall.

The style is simple. It's a bucket bag. No frills. It's a classic bag that will never go out of style. It's very minimalistic and if you're The Row, it's considered quiet luxury. Now, I know this is not a 1:1 review because I didn't buy The Row bag to compare. I was just not ready to spend nearly $2K on this bag, especially since there really isn't anything unique about the bag to say, that's definitely a bag by The Row. The J.Crew version costs $228 for the nubuck. There are other versions to choose from, one with full leather in black for $118.50 (40% off) and a third version that's half leather, and half suede for $154.50 (also on sale).

The sizing is very similar, they're almost identical. The Row Medium Park Tote measures 13" x 11" x 6. The J.Crew Berkely Bucket bag measures 12.5" x 13" x 6". Both bags are quite slouchy, so I would say it's close enough in size that it's not much of a difference. The base of the bag is probably the easiest way to tell the difference. From the looks of it, The Park Tote has more of a rectangular shaped base, while the Berkeley Bucket bag has a rounded base. You all know I love two bags from The Row. Actually, I have not done a review on the large Banana bag in burgundy. It's going to be my next bag review, so stay tuned.

My Margaux 12 has very smooth leather, so soft and supple that it scratches way too easily, but that's part of the look. It's going to look worn in and I can't wait to see what it will look like in 5 years. The Banana bag is made of grained calfskin leather. Also very soft but more resistant to scratches. I'm going to assume the Park Tote would be made out of similar leather. They are offered in both smooth and grained calfskin.

Is this J.Crew bag an unspoken dirty little secret? Is The Row version worth 10 times the price?

For $228, I decided to give the Berkeley Bucket Bag a try. I think nubuck is the best choice out of the available options. I wasn't crazy about the half suede and half leather version. The full leather in black wasn't bad, but the leather looked a little thin to me and not as luxe. The nubuck is thicker and feels velvety soft.

What exactly is nubuck anyway? Nubuck is made from the tougher exterior leather that's been sanded or buffed to give it a velvety feel, while suede is the underside of leather which is softer and harder to maintain. I love suede, but it really doesn't hold up well. The only disadvantage to nubuck, is that it stains easily. I've only worn this bag out once so I can't say if this is true, but I am going to assume it is. This is the first bag that I've owned that's nubuck.

I think this size is great for my petite frame. It doesn't look overwhelming on me. I admit, the hobo style is not my favorite because the strap tends to slide off my shoulder. I think it's because my shoulders slope downwards. Definitely jealous of those who have shoulders like bicycle handle bars. My best friend is built like that. 😆

When I do carry bags like this, I tend to have to keep the bag tucked behind my elbow with my hand holding on to the strap by the front. This helps keep the bag from sliding off my shoulder.

How gorgeous does this bag look? I think it makes a great fall bag.

Let's take a look at the details of the bag.

This is a very simple design with minimal seams with very clean lines. Even so, I do love the way it slouches. I love slouchy bags and I can not lie. You can really tell how the leather has that velvety feel.

The bottom of the bag is flat, and is actually pretty sturdy, so the bottom of bag will not sag. I kind of like that. You can lay it flat, and it'll sit nicely.

The handle is fairly thin, it's maybe a little more than half an inch wide. The inside of the bag is unlined, but it does feel like they may have sanded and buffed the suede to feel rougher and I don't mean that in a bad way. The inside should hold up well overtime. Suede can get matted and it is hard to keep clean.

The inside is very spacious for a medium sized bag. This bucket bag can fit a 13 inch laptop, not that I would suggest doing that, but it does it. If you would like to see what fits, make sure to check out my video.

This bag has leather ties to cinch the bag to keep closed. I do demonstrate how I tie the bag in my video as well, it's quick and easy to do.

I think this is a fantastic bag for the price. It completely satisfies my want for this style bag. I think if you do want a bucket bag like the Park Tote but not convinced about spending $1850 like me, this J.Crew version is a great option. Let me know what you think of this bag! Would you choose J.Crew or The Row?

  1. I think the J Crew bag is a fantastic dupe for The Row bag! It looks so soft, and you can't beat the price! I'm a sucker for slouchy bags too. That being said, I can't wait for your review on the Banana bag - that one caught my eye immediately!

    2. Hi Lola! Slouchy Banana bag will be up next. Oh, since they did a sneaky drop already, I wonder if they are still having a drop tomorrow? I'll have to check out the new Softstreme stuff. Thanks for the heads up. Anything you really like from it?

    3. I really like the Velvet Oversized Scubas, but I haven't liked the sizing of the regular ones in the past.

I'm guessing there's not going to be a regular drop today, because I bet they're going to start their Black Friday Sale early. I hope there's nothing tempting, because my wallet has taken a beating this month already!

    4. Ohhh, I wonder if it will be tonight. A lot of sales have already started so Lulu is late to the game. I hope they have some really good deals. But TBH there isn't much from Lulu I want right now, so the prices have to be pretty amazing for me to buy.

  2. The J Crew bucket bag is so cute. Somehow I like the look of The Row bag more xD but wow that price. I have never heard of that brand before but holy moly it is not worth that price! I think the J Crew version is similar enough. I think I like the drape of The Row bag though.
I don't use bags that' don't zip cause I would totally drop stuff.... -Janessa
PS I can't believe it's almost Thanksgiving! I hope you have a wonderful week

    1. Haahha, yeah The Row bag is amazing. They're owned by the Olsen twins. It's their own company, which I have to give them props for. They really made a name for themselves. The price is high for what it is.

      Have a great Thanksgiving holiday!

  3. i bought the row's park tote 2-3 months ago (this was before they increased the price of this style across the board). i wondered if i was being ridiculous for paying so much for such a single bag, so i checked out the j.crew bucket bag in store. for anyone curious, these are differences:

    1. the park tote is made of a (much) higher quality material. i bought a suede park tote and it is much softer compared to the suede side of the half suede, half leather bucket bag. the park tote is also thicker than the bucket bag

    2. as you mentioned, the park tote has a rectangular base instead of a circular one

    3. there are some minor differences in details like the shape of the part of the shoulder strap where it attaches to the bag

the major difference is the material. after touching the park tote, i really couldn't go back. i'm a big fan of these ultra minimalist, no logo, and no hardware bags so it was worth it for me! i'd really recommend people to check out both bags in store if they can, and see if the material is worth the basically 10x price difference

    1. also, i was at my dermatology clinic today and someone complimented the bag for the first time. i was surprised because it is such a normal-looking bag. no one knows it's the row, and i don't really go around telling people either lol. so it's definitely not a bag you buy for looks

    2. Hi there! Thanks for adding more detail to the Park Tote. Appreciate that very much. I did see the half leather and half suede in the store and wasn't impressed. The nubuck is much thicker and higher quality material. Thus the slightly extra cost, and it's not on sale. That said, knowing the leather quality from my Margaux and Banana bag, I'm sure the Park Tote is super luxurious.

Enjoy your Park Tote! What color did you get?

Did You Know There Are Two Different Ugg Companies? Review - UGG Lowmel

So I was shocked when I learned a couple of months ago that there are actually two UGG brands. The original UGG since 1974 is the original Australian brand that are made from sheepskin. The other is an American company with the big G uses synthetic fabric and are made in China/Vietnam. Here are the two different logos.  The one the left with the big G in the middle is the company that's made in China/Vietnam. The one on the right is the original UGG since 1974. Each pair is made in Australia! I had no idea and feel so duped. I didn't learn this until after I bought the Lowmel's which are very popular at the moment. But I will order a pair from UGG since 1974 so I can support the original brand. Plus I really want to experience the real thing and I will report back my findings. 😅 That said, I still actually really like the Lowmels. UGG Lowmel Sand   Size Kids 4 I typically wear size 5.5 and I decided to try the kids size 4 which actually fit well, if just a smidge large...

Review! Coach Soft Empire Carryall 40 Merlot

I am super excited about this review! This has been the most anticipated Coach bag since The Rogue came out. At least for me. When I first saw this bag on the purseblog , my eyes widened and I was immediately obsessed. The Soft Empire Carryall comes in four sizes. Size 48 is ridiculously big, I cannot pull it off, but the 40? Perfect. Size 35 and 26 just doesn't give off the same wow factor. This bag is meant to be a statement piece and head turner. Kudos to Stewart Vevers for creating another hit that everyone will be obsessing over for a long time. I hear that more colors will be released soon, and I am hoping the distressed lived-in version will not be exclusive to size 48. In case it doesn't happen, I'll be using my Empire 40 as much as I can to give it a distressed look myself.  For reference I'm 4 feet 11 inches tall and please check out my video to see what fits! Coach Empire 40 Merlot This bag is huge, it's definitely the biggest bag in my collection. ...

First Impressions! On Cloudmonster Void

Happy Friday! I've been branching out into other brands for footwear. I mentioned in a previous post I just don't think my Allbirds are cutting it anymore. Allbirds are more of a casual walking shoe. Anything over 10K, my feet start to hurt. I have tried Hokas, and they seem to be decent so far, I can walk 12K steps a day and haven't had issues. However, I am loving the On Cloudmoster Void even more! For reference I typically wear size 5.5 in Allbirds which is my normal street size for sneakers and I am also wearing size 5.5 in On Cloudmonster Void. On CloudMonster Void Ivory | Wolf Size 5.5 (Currently on sale for 20% off -  $135) I'm not a huge fan of logos on my shoes. I decided on this colorway because I love the light gray and lilac combo and it does have a big On logo, but it blends in nicely with the colors. It still has a minimalistic vibe.  This shoe has a 6mm heel to toe shoe drop. This is a good height if you're a heel to toe striker which I am. This is...
