Money Talk - How Much I Spent In 2023

Happy February! I know I promised you all a 2023 summary of how much I spent on Lululemon, Naked Cashmere, Vuori, Aviator Nation, and Athleta. I've been keeping an excel spreadsheet of all my purchases since 2013! 😳 In case you were wondering I started buying Lululemon clothing in 2015, and the first year I spent a whopping $6,728. This was when Cool Racerbacks were $42 and Swiftly Tanks were $48 and Speed Shorts were $54. Those were the good old days. It's kind of scary to see how the prices keep going up year after year.

Here. We. Go.

Let's Do The Numbers for 2022 vs 2023

2023 was a great year for my wallet compared to 2022. 😆 I'm actually really surprised by the totals. I didn't think it would be that much of a difference. I spent almost half as much as I did in 2022, which is amazing. Lululemon still takes the biggest piece of the pie. However, I should mention that I have a rewards card with Athleta and I do get a lot of their clothes for less and Athleta has way better sales than Lululemon. Overall, I am happy with how much I spent in 2023 on clothing.

For 2024, I would love for the numbers to go down even further. Not sure if it will be possible since prices keep going up. I do think the increase in pricing has put me off from a lot of purchases lately. Which in turn makes me try to purchase everything on sale as much as I can.

Since January was a no-buy month for me, the numbers are still at zero except for my Allbirds purchase. Totally worth breaking my ban!

What was your spending like in 2023? What do you hope for 2024? I want to grow my savings even more this year. The older I get, the more I worry about my nest egg. My husband is always pushing to save, whereas I totally spend more than I should, but 2023 was heading in the right direction, at least in the clothing department.

My purse hobby is a whole different story. It's hard for me to get an accurate number on how much I spend on bags from year to year, because I tend to buy and sell my bags constantly. If a bag falls out of favor for the new ones that come in, I will sell it to offsets some of my new purchase. I guess I can start keeping track of that too, but it's just more time on spreadsheets and I try to keep things as simple as possible.

So what's coming for 2024? Denim for sure. I am on the hunt to up my denim game. I'm really excited about this actually. It's been years since I bought a new pair of jeans and as excited as I am, my husband is even more estatic. He prefers me in denim, much to my dismay. So I am going to find the most comfortable pair of jeans and they have to feel as good as my Vuori joggers. That's the bar I am going to set! It'll be an interesting journey, and I hope you will enjoy the ride with me! You'll also see more reviews on bags, since it is my true passion.

That's it for me, have a wonderful weekend everybody!

  1. Glad I caught your post today! The ribbed softstreme MR wide leg cropped has been on my wishlist, but I couldn't commit. Now that its WMTM, just bought it! And if you happen to find a nice pair of comfy jeans for us short gals, be sure to share!

  2. I’m so proud of you, Leslie! ;)

I didn’t keep track of how much I spent on my 2024 purchases but I did spend quite a bit on Allbirds shoes. @_@‘.

Just checked my order history and I’ve only purchased 14 items from LLL in 2023, with 5 of them being belt bags. Yes LLL bags is still my weak spot LOL.

I love that Athleta clothings are more versatile with interesting design details, but sadly prices have been going up and I won’t buy in regular prices anymore. Also the Brooklyn Mid Rise Ankle Pant always sell out in XXS petite and I don’t need another pair of black pant. A lot of people have the same complaint in the comment section but guess XXS petite is still very limited in quantities.

I hope to purchase even less clothings in 2024 but don’t think I can resist anything nice in purple or grey lol.

    1. Thanks Andrea! For 2024, I'll tally up my Allbirds. We'll see what happens.

14 items is not bad at all for Lululemon. Keep it up. I hope to also buy less clothing this year. Will try to make better decisions with the items I end up keeping. I keep toying with getting rid of half my closet. I keep trying but I haven't been able to succeed!

  3. You're brave to keep track of your spending. I know I should be more meticulous about my spending, but am a bit afraid of reality when I see it on a spreadsheet. My little wins are I aim to not spend a dime at least 2x a week, which includes no eating out, milk teas, etc.

    1. Hi Jean L! Yeah when I see the spreadsheet totals, sometimes it makes me cringe, but at least I know where all my money went lol. Not spending 2X a week is a pretty cool idea. I may have to try that too!

  4. Wow! I spent considerably less than you did this past year. But I did go a little crazy at the end of the year with my birthday in November and then Christmas. My Athleta bill was about $800, the vast majority of it on items on sale.

I haven’t bought any clothing since then. I moved to a different state and I’m about to close on a house which is considerably more expensive than the one I sold. Given that I truly don’t need anything and this new house, I’m hoping for a (clothing and purse) no-buy year. Wish me luck!

    1. Hi there, this is my birthday month, so I expect I will go a little crazy since I mostly didn't buy anything in January.

Good luck on your no-buy year! That's a huge challenge, but sounds like you're content which is great and congrats on your new home!

  5. Leslie, keeping track financials is very smart. Does that include the items you returned. Lol
Reminds me of your similar totals items i bought many years ago exclusively with Lululemon maybe $6000 - $ 9000 CDN in 2017 and 2018. Nothing worth purchasing last few years of any note. .Since i own similar colors and styles they sell today.

By the way hows the fitness progress coming along? Last i heard baby steps, progressing well i hope?

I assume your determined excited to suit up in fashionable swimwear this summer flaunting off all the hard work and time well invested in the gym.

Valentines Day coming up hope have a suggested request for you try on session and model. To witness the progress you made and transformed into very pretty confident lovely women..

    1. Hi Mack! Yes if I end up returning the item, I remove it from the spreadsheet. Agree, I spent much more back when I first got into Lululemon. There's only so much you can buy every year from them.

Fitness progress is coming along, I do plan on a fitness update. I moved up in weights a little bit, but still maybe halfway to what I used to lift. Baby steps!

I took a look at the Wundermost Ultra-Soft Nulu Short-Sleeve Crew Thong Bodysuit. I don't think I'm ready for that yet! Maybe give me a few more months! I do love Nulu though, it is super soft but thin. I wonder how well it holds up.

  6. That's so cool you tracked your purchases all year! I did this a couple of years ago but forgot about it. I thought maybe since being employed with LLL, I might spend less (because I already have so much - and the discount)...but I'm not sure that's the case. I'm still very particular with what comes into my closet, but a lot still comes in. I think I'll start tracking today. Thanks for the inspo! :)

    1. Hi LZ! It's just something I started doing in 2013. It can be eye watering to look at the totals at the end of each month, but it's good to do!

We tried HelloFresh for the past two months - Here's our review

Hi everyone! This post is written by my husband. Some of you may know he does all the cooking around here. 😅 We noticed we were spending a lot of money on food and eating out every month and wanted to see if a meal kit service would save us money and time. After looking at a few meal kit services we settled on HelloFresh. Without further ado, here's Jared's review. (Original post date Aug 2022). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ As you may have seen from Leslie's Instagram stories for the past 2 months, we've been using HelloFresh for most of our meals. The main drivers for this were to better track what we eat and because on the advice of my doctor, I should be eating more home cooked meals. Before I go any further, it should be noted that my original career path was in culinary arts, but twists and turns in life changed that. So I do have formal cooking experience. A little background story. Over the years, I've developed
