Please note, we have an updated review on our HelloFresh experience after more than 2 years of using the service.
Hi everyone! This post is written by my husband. Some of you may know he does all the cooking around here. 😅 We noticed we were spending a lot of money on food and eating out every month and wanted to see if a meal kit service would save us money and time. After looking at a few meal kit services we settled on HelloFresh. Without further ado, here's Jared's review. (Original post date Aug 2022).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As you may have seen from Leslie's Instagram stories for the past 2 months, we've been using HelloFresh for most of our meals. The main drivers for this were to better track what we eat and because on the advice of my doctor, I should be eating more home cooked meals. Before I go any further, it should be noted that my original career path was in culinary arts, but twists and turns in life changed that. So I do have formal cooking experience.
A little background story.
Over the years, I've developed a love/hate relationship with cooking. The main thing I dislike about cooking is menu planning. I hate trying to come up with a vision of what to make each day for a week and then creating a grocery plan.
There are a few reasons why I hate it. First, it you want to be economical with both your time and finances, then you should look to find items that can carry over between multiple meals. For example, buy whole chicken, a few potatoes, and some broccoli. Roast the chicken and one night you have the breast meat with mashed potatoes and some steamed broccoli and the next night, you have the leftover leg and thigh with roasted potatoes and roasted broccoli. That's great, but that's 2 nights of having almost the same thing. Sure, you save time and money but you introduce a bit of monotony.
Now if you want variety in your meals, then you typically end up spending more than you want and any time savings you would've gotten by eating similar meals each night no longer applies.
Lastly, and this is more of a me thing, I don't adapt well when plans change. I can spend a bunch of time making out a list of meals we're going to have for a week but if one ingredient is sold out or doesn't look appealing, it kills my plan and I'm not easily able to pivot mentally.
This is where I thought a meal kit service could come alleviate some of that.
We went with HelloFresh because we actually did try Blue Apron when we first moved here and I just wasn't impressed. The dishes took too much time and involved way more pots and pans than I felt was needed. We may try Blue Apron again to see if much has changed but HelloFresh seemed to have overtaken Blue Apron in the popularity department.
Now some of the promises of a meal kit service are saving money, saving time, reducing waste, healthier meals, and potentially some weight loss because they're giving you real serving sizes rather than the more gluttonous approach to food we take in this country.
So first, are we saving money?
Yes. Not even a question. Eating at home more has steadily lowered our food bill. What we spent in July for both groceries and restaurants was almost half of what we had spent in May. Could we save more money if we just did our own grocery shopping? Probably, but then that would mean I'd need to do menu planning and as you've read above, I'm just not a fan of that.
How much time does it take to cook a meal?
The time HelloFresh says a meal should take has been pretty accurate. I can get our dinner on the table usually in under 30 minutes. Of the 20 or so meals they offer each week, I purposely look for weeknight meals to be around 30 minutes and weekend meals up to 40 minutes.
How sustainable and eco-friendly is it?
Reducing waste is a bit trickier. We're definitely not wasting food the way we were because there are no leftovers and you're not throwing out unused ingredients really. There are some meals that come with more items than you need. The biggest culprit are lettuce wrapped tacos. You get a whole head of lettuce and they're like “take 8 leaves to make your tacos”. I solved this by not making them tacos and treating the dish more like a salad.
I'd also say there is less material waste. Every meal is placed in a paper bag and at most, you'll have a few small plastic bags holding ingredients. Maybe it's just me, but when I look at what I put in the trash can, it feels like a lot less than when I bought my own ingredients.
Healthier meals and weight loss?
For the most part. Earlier in our using HelloFresh, I didn't see the calories when choosing the meals, so when we got them, some of the meals were nearly 1,000 calories a serving. When you look at the offerings for the week, you actually have to dig into the meal to find the calories. At a quick glance, they'll tell you how long something takes, if the meal meets any guidelines (such as vegetarian, carb smart, Mediterranean), but you have to actually open the recipe to see the calorie count and the complexity. I wish those stats were part of the quick glance stats. Leslie recently had her yearly physical and her blood work did show improvement. Not that it was bad to begin with, it was just better than it was prior to the kits.
Lastly on the overall positive side, I do like the variety of the meals we're eating each week. It definitely doesn't feel as monotonous as it would if I had to plan the meals myself.
So what are the things that I'm not a fan of?
The vegetables. Not the quality of the veggies so much but more of the quantity. I feel like they really skimp on this. Sure, you'll get plenty of carbs and a decent amount of protein but what they give you for green beans for two people really feels like a single serving. What I've taken to is looking at what's coming for the week and then just buying a little extra while we're at Target or something.
The other thing I'm not a fan of is the lack of fish options. Fish isn't offered regularly and when it is, it's usually an up-charge (what HelloFresh called Premium Picks). We did that a few times and for the most part, we don't think the up-charge is worth it. One meal was a surf and turf (lobster tails and steak) and the steak was chewy as all hell and the lobster tails were insanely small and rubbery. Stick with the regularly offered meals and don't do the premium picks. We're going to try other meal kit services and the one that offers more fish options will be the one we go with.
Lastly this isn't much of a complaint, just an observation that you should know about. Almost every meal will use the following items; lemon, sour cream (or cream cheese), and scallions. I understand why; the sour cream adds fat and fat adds flavor to a meal. Thinly sliced scallion tops that you sprinkle on top of a finished meal gives the meal an air of “ooo, fancy”, and zesting a lemon makes a novice feel like they're really doing something special. I don't bother zesting.
Verdict?
Overall, I've been happy with the service. The saving money part is nice but I more enjoy the fact that we're eating home cooked meals regularly without feeling like it's a huge time sink into prep and clean up. I personally have better things to do with my time than menu plan, grocery shop, spend a ton of time doing mise en place, and then having a slew of things to clean after the meal. If you already have a routine that works for you, that's great. But if you've been looking for a way to save money and eat more responsibly, I would recommend a meal kit service.
The meals look very tasty.
ReplyDeleteThey really are tasty. I want to say we had over 40 meals and maybe 2 or 3 weren't to my liking.
DeleteI tried HF once and liked most of the meals. I would do it again, but I had issues with delivery. I'm in an apartment complex that requires fob entry into each building. The delivery person left each box (2 total) at different outside building entrances to different buildings in my complex. I was lucky enough to be able to find them. I understand apartments can be confusing, but at least leave them together if you're not going to bother to call me. Unfortunately, that ruined it for me - but the food was really good.
ReplyDeleteHi LZ - we have a similar set up. I live in a complex with 4 buildings. Sometimes they'll just deliver one box and not two. Once or twice they left it outside without bringing it in. Usually they call us, but it depends on the driver. Even with the delivery issues we found it was still worth it.
DeleteI really liked Sunbasket! They have more international options versus American meat + potatoes dishes. Lots of interesting flavors- I tried black garlic for the first time using it!
ReplyDeleteHi Lauren! We are trying Sunbasket next! It'll be interesting to see how it compares.
Deletehi Leslie! I haven't tried any meal prep companies because I mostly cook simple Chinese dishes. Your meals look delicious though! Jared must be a great cook~ I'll consider Hello Fresh in the future if I feel adventurous!
ReplyDeleteHi Karen! I grew up on Chinese food for 35 years. The past 7 years I haven't had it as much and I do miss it from time to time. Jared is really good at cooking, thankfully, because I am really bad at it. LOL.
DeleteHellos fresh US looks different in Canada. With each box I had to pay 10 dollars for shipping and the meat, carb and veggie portions were very small. I’m 110 pounds and felt like it was small. I think our boxes with shipping come close to 90 dollars….I don’t like cooking that I don’t mind left overs so that I don’t have to cook the next day. I found there were no left overs and I had to supplement as well. Overall, after the free meal promo I cancelled. Plus there was so much repetition of meals…. But your meals look different. You’re portions look much more substantial.
ReplyDeleteHi there! Our boxes ran about $90 also, more or less for 5 meals. Each meal was usually around 750 to 800 calories. That said, there were definitely no left overs. Some of the meals we would add more veggies to it, but felt the meat/protein portions were substantial. Our biggest gripe was not enough veggies and fish options.
DeleteI was going to say that portions in Canada are MUCH MUCH smaller. That one dish you took a picture of, that serves 2 people. With having to pay for shipping and no discount on a box, with taxes, it comes to 90 bucks a box and for 3 different dinners that serve 2 people but the portions are tiny!
DeleteOhhh, any chance you could send me some photos if you took any? I would love to see the difference. Also, not sure if it would be helpful to you, we use salad plates that are 8.5 inches.
DeleteTried it, horrible experience. Are you compensated by HF?
ReplyDeleteHi there, no I do not get any commission or compensation from Hello Fresh. This is our honest review. What did you not like about your experience?
DeleteAfter many attempts over the past 2 months I have been unable to cancel my account. “Unsubscribe” does not work. I am hoping by leaving a message it will get their attention. I had been a customer for one year.
ReplyDeleteHi there, unsubscribe will not work. This is what I found on their site.
Delete"Log into your account. Click on your name in the upper right-hand corner, then click 'Account Settings'. Scroll down on the Plan settings page and click 'Cancel Plan' (under Status section). Follow the prompt(s) for your cancellation."
Let me know if that works for you.
Also, I believe you have to use the main website, not the mobile app.
DeleteI had same experience. I cancelled on website and still after several weeks had a box delivered without any notice until I had by chance opened my door after heavy storms. After over an hour on phone with 3 different reps, I was told too bad. Never had such bad customer service in my life.
DeleteI need gluten free food
ReplyDeleteHi there! Hello Fresh doesn't have as many gluten free options, but another service called Sunbasket does. We will have a review up of Sunbasket in two weeks.
DeleteWe’ve been using Hello Fresh for a couple of months. I agree with the benefit of not having to plan meals (that was one of the main reasons I tried it). I also like that there is no waste. I think the portion size is fine; it’s what we should be eating, though possibly smaller than what we’re used to. However, if the food wasn’t good, I wouldn’t stick with it. I’ve found it to be delicious. We haven’t tried a dish we didn’t like. Unless something drastically changes, I’m sticking with Hello Fresh.
ReplyDeleteOur daughter bought and paid for meals from hello fresh to be delivered to us .They never came so my wife called today. She was informed that before we could get the meals shipped out that are paid for she would have to reactivate her account and spend $75.00 before they would ship the gift from our daughter. Who ever heard of such a scam? Has anyone else had this happen?
ReplyDeleteI just started a trial with HF. I was really pleased with the first meal I tried - it was the least appealing of the meals I ordered but was very tasty! I also appreciate that each meal came packaged with all the needed ingredients in individual paper bags and only the proteins separate. This makes it easy to pull out your next meal and jump right in without having to dig out the correct ingredients. I also like that I can try different flavors (even though it means single-use packaging) since I’m not a huge fan of cooking and sometimes don’t have more than the most basic things on hand. I have also tried EveryPlate - their food was also delicious but I had issues with receiving subpar vegetables for several meals and I think I used every single pot, pan, plate, and dish during prep - not a fan of that so I was pleased that HF seems a bit more condensed. I also paid about $90 for 3 meals/2 servings each, which is plenty since I’m single. Most of the meals seem to hold up well for leftovers, and still taste good, even though I really don’t like leftovers. I would like to try a couple other services, but I’ve been happy so far because the meals taste much better than anything I would plan on my own.
ReplyDeleteI am unable to use their meals and cancelled my account. They created a secondary account and I had to cancel again and again.
ReplyDeleteTheir customer service is pathetic and I would never recommend them.
I appreciate your write-up. I've had one delivery (two meals), and enjoyed preparing and eat I my them. The next delivery is coming up in a couple days, and is twice the cost (I caught a deal on first box). I hope to enjoy this one twice as much! Ha.
ReplyDeleteTry Dream Dinners! Locally owned and operated brick and mortar meal prep store. We are the original meal kit company and have been around for over 20 years!
ReplyDeleteI use HungryRoot. While I like it overall, there is still a lot of food waste. For example, if the recipe calls for 2 tablespoons of a sauce, they send me a whole jar of sauce. If I get that same recipe a few weeks later, I get another jar of the sauce. If I want the rest of the ingredients but not the sauce because I already have it, I have to order each ingredient separately and then take a picture of the recipe so I don't forget what it was a week later when I go to cook it. It's a big time sink. I want something that is more set and forget.
ReplyDeleteAside from the lettuce you mentioned, does Hello Fresh send pre-portioned ingredients?
Hi Beth, I can see how that can be frustrating to receive a whole jar of sauce when you only need a small portion of it.
DeleteYes, HelloFresh does send pre-portioned ingredients so there should be zero waste. Hope that helps!
Great to know. Thank you!
DeleteWe tried Hello Fresh for awhile and the meals were fine. We stopped because we just didn’t have enough time to prep them. However, the reason I would never, ever recommend them to anyone is the non-stop harassment after we unsubscribed. They would call every day even though I asked them to stop. After many months of ignoring their calls, they finally stopped. Wow. Never again!
ReplyDeleteWe don't see us cancelling HelloFresh anytime soon. There are options for faster prep and cook time. We try and choose ones that take around 30 to 40 minutes total.
